Quick Actions
- Set the video meeting language (Zoom/Teams/Webex) to the language people have agreed to speak. This helps automatic captions work better.
- Test the caption settings before the meeting.
- Ask everyone to set their caption language correctly.
- Start the meeting by checking that captions are on and set to the right language.
- If more than one language will be used, tell people before the meeting.
- For important meetings, use a human captioner or note taker, not only automatic captions.
- Ask people to speak clearly and not too fast.
- If the group is using the chat function, put key words, names, and links in the chat.
- Save, check and share the transcript after the meeting.
More Information
- Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Cisco Webex all recommend selecting the correct spoken language for caption accuracy.
- The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Recognizes qualified interpreters and real-time captioning (CART) as important communication supports and emphasizes that organizations should provide appropriate accommodations to ensure equal participation for people who are D/deaf or hard of hearing.
Examples
- International Organization for Standardization (ISO)'s organizers confirm the meeting language, test captioning and interpretation settings, and provide key terminology before international committee meetings, so automated captions and interpreters are more accurate.
